Gigi Hadid and Camila Cabello Were Living for Taylor Swift's 2019 MTV VMAs Performance

Taylor Swift opened up the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards with a very colorful performance of her hit song "You Need to Calm Down." And when I say colorful, I mean colorful—truly every color in the rainbow was represented. That's fitting, given that the song was viewed as Swift's support of the LGBTQ+ community when it was originally released in June. (See: lyrics like, "Why are you mad? When you could be GLAAD.")

The performance matched Swift's music video for the song almost to a tee—down to even using some of the same dancers. The pop icon kicked things off lounging in a beach chair, as she does in the video, before doing some choreography and a lot of iconic hair flips. I was 100 percent here for the entire thing.

But not as much as I was here for Swift's performance of "Lover," the title track off her recently-released album, which she went straight into after "You Need to Calm Down." Swift opted for no dancers or props on stage for this part and wore a chic, sparkly purple blazer. Her vocals were on point, and many of Swift's friends, including Camila Cabello and Gigi Hadid, were seen getting their full lives in the audience.

Fans were clearly living for this, too. Check out just a few reactions, below:

On Friday, August 23, Taylor Swift released her seventh studio album, Lover, a sprawling, 18-track collection of music that details several phases of a romantic relationship. Swift hasn't revealed the exact inspiration behind the album, but some fans (myself included) are convinced the record is a love letters of sorts to her current boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn.

She's released three singles from the album so far: "ME!," featuring Brendon Urie from Panic! At the Disco; "You Need to Calm Down"; and "Lover," which just had a music video premiere last week. That clip has a ton of Easter eggs in it, so it's only a matter of time before fans start digging for meaning in this VMAs performance.
