Gigi Hadid says she had a 'certain body type' as a new model that didn't fit the fashion industry: 'I was probably harder on my body than I should have been'

Today, Gigi Hadid is one of the biggest supermodels still hitting the runways. But in a new interview with the Sunday Times, she admits feeling like her body didn't live up to the fashion industry's exacting standards.

"When I started out I was a heavily trained volleyball player and I had a certain body type from that," Hadid, 27, tells the British newspaper. "At that time fashion hadn’t started to get into a more inclusive body-image conversation. I was probably harder on my body than I should have been. I wasn’t starving myself but I was very routined. Since then I’ve got into this idea of body neutrality. I love my body for what it has done but I’m not obsessed with it.”

Hadid also reflected on her looks, saying, "I don’t think I’m the prettiest person in the world. Some Botox could probably help but I’m not so obsessed with caring that I want to do anything about it.”

The mom to 2-year-old Khai is also looking beyond the catwalk for career opportunities. Last year she launched the luxury cashmere brand Guest in Residence, and is currently hosting Netflix's Next in Fashion alongside Tan France. "I think it’s unrealistic to see modeling as my lifestyle for ever," Hadid says.

The supermodel also opened up to the magazine about motherhood and co-parenting her daughter with ex-boyfriend Zayn Malik.

"She has already given me so much,” Hadid says of her daughter. “I always wanted to be a mom, but I was never obsessive about it or [thought that] I was put on this Earth to be a mum. I’ve always been quite organized, so having Khai at the time that I did was a blessing. I’m so glad to be a young mom.”

She also shared that she tries to work "when Khai is with her dad."

"That she can be with both parents makes me very happy,” she adds, sharing that co-parenting means "keeping the importance of the child's happiness at the forefront."

"You have a long life alongside this person," Hadid notes.

Hadid has more recently been linked to actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who is more than 20 years her senior. And while she doesn't clear the air about any potential romance, she does share that trying to date as a famous person has its challenges.

"I don’t know how anyone expects anybody they see in the public eye to have any sort of normal dating experience if you tie people [to one another] so quickly," she says. "It’s a bummer. I just stopped reading it.”
