If you have family or friends who love gardening and landscaping, getting them a gift that helps them tend to their outdoor space is a great way to support their passion. Whether you’re shopping for a seasoned green thumb, a novice gardener, or someone who simply loves to spend time in their outdoor sanctuary, it’s not always easy to know what they need for their beloved flower, herb, or vegetable garden. I’ve found the best gardening gifts that are both practical yet giftable. From innovative tools to fun gifts, there are lots of ways you can pleasantly surprise your favorite gardener, no matter the season.

Best Gifts for Gardeners

Let's Spend More Time Outside: Best Camping SuppliesBest Patio Dining SetsBest Indoor Plants

The Expert

I’ve been a gardener since 2015 and focus on organic and sustainable practices. From composting to testing soil pH to hydroponic systems, I’ve become familiar with different gardening tools and techniques to help grow my own food and create healthier soil for both my family and the planet year-round. I've written about gardening, natural health and sustainable products for a variety of publications, including Bob Vila, Popular Mechanics, and Fitness Magazine.

What to Consider

If you're having trouble picking out the perfect gift for the gardener in your life, I've outlined a few things to keep in mind while you shop for a birthday, holiday, or anniversary present.

Experienced vs. Beginner Gardener

While an experienced gardener probably has all the tools they need, beginners would likely benefit from new or unique tools. Gifts for experienced gardeners can include less-practical items such as bulbs, seeds, and bird or pollinator feeders, whereas newbies may love a new toolkit or garden cart.

Size and Type of Garden

The size and type of garden matter when choosing the right gift. For example, if your gardener is a hydroponic garden enthusiast, they probably won’t need garden gloves or digging tools. However, if your recipient has a large outdoor garden, gifts such as a garden seat, garden cart, or composter could be ideal.

It’s also helpful to keep in mind what your gardener likes to grow. Flower gardens often require a different pH and soil than vegetable gardens. Large or vine-like varieties of vegetables, such as peas or tomato plants, need trellises, which can make for a practical gift. Keeping these things in mind can help you choose the right present for the green thumb in your life.

Price and Quality

Garden tools tend to take a beating season after season, so upgrading your gardener’s supplies can be a welcome gift. The price and quality matter when shopping for gifts, so whether you’re looking for budget-friendly items or want to splurge, considering items that hold up well over time and provide value throughout the season is a smart choice when shopping for gardening gifts.

How We Selected Our Gardening Gift Ideas

I selected these products based on a mix of personal testing and customer reviews. Each item was selected based on its quality, positive reception with buyers, and relevance to both experienced and new gardeners, with gardens large and small.

Although these gifts are intended more for gardeners with traditional soil gardens, there are also options for those with patio gardens in pots, raised beds, and even hydroponic gardens. From traditional to innovative tools to decorative items and seeds, here are our top 30 picks for the best gifts for gardeners.

1/4-inch Soaker Hose Tubing

For your favorite gardener who has lots of areas to water around, this soaker hose is a great gift. It can be used on traditional gardens, raised beds, trees, shrubs, and potted plants. A slow drip ensures the roots of plants get watered and not the leaves, which can help protect leaves from rot and getting burned in the sunlight.

The middle layer of the tubing is also made of recycled content, so it’s a gift to appease the eco-friendly gardener on your gift list.

Q+A With Expert Gardener Jenn Ryan

My aspiring gardener doesn’t have a yard–How can I help them get into the hobby?

If you’re shopping for someone who doesn’t have a green space to make a garden, I’d recommend giving them some raised beds or stackable planters, which you can set up on a porch, deck or patio. If they don’t have any outdoor space at all, you could look into getting them a hydroponic garden, which would allow them to grow plants without any outdoor space or exposure. (Just make sure they have space in their home for it.)

How do you know when it’s time to replace your gardening tools?

Most gardening tools will let you know when they need to be replaced—your trowel may grow dull, your shovel might start to rust, or the tines of your rake may start breaking off. Some tools can be repaired, like a shovel with a splintered wooden handle, but many will need to be replaced.

Depending on how often you use your tools and how you store them, you may need to repair or replace them every few seasons. High-quality tools, stored in a dry place in the off-season, should last much longer, though.

When is the best time to give my gardener plants or seeds?

Most outdoor gardeners start planting in early spring–it may vary depending on the region and temperatures at the start of the year. Many gardeners will do a second planting the summer–July or August, to set up fall harvests.

That said, some plants need a unique planting cycle. For example, you have to plant pumpkins early–May or June–so they can full grow by fall. Potatoes can also get planted early, right after the last risk of frost in early spring.

How do I help a new gardener who wants to learn more about plants and horticulture?

There are tons of books and magazines that can teach about every kind of planting, so it really depends on what your gardener loves best! Herbal or organic enthusiasts will love Mother Earth News, which focuses on organic gardening and sustainable living. Veggie lovers might appreciate Food Gardening or Fine Gardening, both of which give tips for growing and harvesting food at home. For newbies or those interested in smaller gardens, The Backyard Gardener is a comprehensive guide to getting started with self-sufficient gardening. For flower enthusiasts, Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden book is full of practical advice for growing, harvesting, and arranging flowers year-round, making it a must-have.
