Giambattista Valli Just Made Foil Eyelashes a Thing, and They're Absolutely Beautiful

Paired with natural hair textures, it made for a stunning runway moment in Paris.

The Spring 2019 season was, to put it mildly, dominated by shiny, shimmery, glittery, glint-y mixed-media beauty looks. Backstage hair and makeup teams doused models' hair in loose sparkles and covered their eyes and lips in rhinestones and metallic foil. And while the beauty trends for Fall 2019 have demonstrated a similar affinity for all things glittery — see: crystal-covered hairstyles on the Area runway, rhinestone freckles for Christian Siriano, pearl-studded eyes at Adeam — it wasn't until the Giambattista Valli show in Paris on Monday that we saw a fresh, more futuristic (and slightly less romantic) take for the coming season.

The makeup look, created by Val Garland for MAC, was focused on the eyes, and it was yet another case of lashes stealing the show. She drew inspiration from the notion of "Guy Bourdin, but undone," according to a backstage report from MAC.

While she left models' faces appearing mostly bare, with no noticeable enhancement on the cheeks, lips or brows, about half of them received a graphic eyeliner look featuring black-and-white slashes and silver foil eyelashes. (The others wore a restrained, no-makeup makeup look.) Yes, we'll repeat that again: Silver. Foil. Eyelashes. Placed only on the lower lid, several millimeters beneath the lash line, the metallic fringe lent a modern edge to the beauty look.

On the top lids, Garland drew a classic black cat-eye using MAC Blacktrack Fluidline, flicking out the wing and extending it slightly at the outer corners. She then enhanced the effect by adding a floating, more exaggerated line in crisp white (using MAC Chromacake in Pure White) midway up the eyelid at the socket line, and another black line on the bottom, beneath the lash line, a basis for the foil strip to then be layered over top.

While perhaps not as flashy, the hair look for the show was equally noteworthy, if you ask us. Each model wore a unique style that felt personal, with hairstylist Anthony Turner clearly intent on letting their natural hair textures shine. That translated to a handful of loose, tousled bobs, some simple ponytails and cornrows as well as several flowing, voluminous, curly styles that floated down the runway with an air of ease and effortlessness, much like the flouncy pieces in the collection.
