'Ghosts' Season 3 Promises More Laughs From the Afterlife

While American remakes of British shows can be hit-and-miss, CBS’s Stateside reimagining of the BBC sitcom Ghosts is an absolute gem. The original 2019 series focuses on a young couple who inherit a sprawling country estate from a distant relative, only to discover that it is (of course) haunted by the spirits of those who have died there over the centuries. This motley crew of ghosts come from a wide variety of time periods, from the prehistoric age all the way up to present day, which makes for pretty limitless comedic possibilities.

The U.S. version follows the original pretty closely, but transplants the action to upstate New York. Its two seasons so far have been a huge hit for CBS—Ghosts was one of the top four most-watched comedies on TV during the 2022-2023 season, according to the network—and the delayed third season returned to production in November following the resolution of the SAG/AFTRA strike. Here’s what we know about Ghosts Season 3 so far, from cast to release date.

What is Ghosts Season 3 about?

Season 2 ended on something of a cliffhanger, as the show’s central couple Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) saw a beacon of light shining out of the roof of their mansion—a telltale sign that one of the resident ghosts has been “sucked off,” a.k.a. transitioned to the next plane of existence. And it sounds like that mystery will play out for at least a while longer in the new season.

The season premiere is intriguingly titled “The Owl,” and its official synopsis is as follows: “Sam, Jay and the remaining ghosts unravel the mystery of which ghost passed into the afterlife; Sam and Jay must relocate an owl in order to do construction on the barn to turn it into Jay's restaurant.”

Ambudkar plays Samantha’s husband Jay. Although he’s unable to see or interact with the ghosts, he develops a relationship of his own with them via Samantha, and the couple gradually learn to coexist with their undead roommates.

Since not many details have been released on Season 3 as yet, the only two cast members we know for sure are returning are McIver and Ambudkar. But the following supporting cast members, who play some of the most prominent ghost characters, are likely to return too—unless any of their characters are revealed to be the one who passed on in the Season 2 finale, of course.

Brandon Scott Jones as Captain Isaac Higgintoot
