German Shepherd Joyfully Playing in the Snow With Dad for the Very First Time Is Capturing Hearts

Whether you bring home a dog from the shelter or a puppy from a breeder, there are so many milestones and firsts that you'll get to enjoy together. Their first movie night, their first trip to the pet store, and for course--their first snow day! Something as mundane as the weather may seem like NBD to the people who deal with it every year, but for a dog it's a whole different story.

Just ask Charlie! This energetic German Shepherd got to see, run through, and play in the snow for the very first time on January 17, and it was the most magical thing to witness. Naturally, he romped through the powder with his dad just like two little boys seeing snow for the first time while Mom took a video for his TikTok account, and it never gets old!

Aww! Charlie looks like he's having so much fun jumping around in the snow, but let's be honest--his dad is having just as much fun! He didn't even bother to put on shoes or warmer clothes before running outside with his German Shepherd, and it's honestly such a vibe. After all, nothing is more important than bonding with your dog. Everything else can wait!

I was so enamored with the dog's first snow day that I hardly noticed just how huge this Shepherd really is. He's one big dog! A few inches of snow aren't nearly enough to put a damper on his plans, and his thick double-layered coat will keep him warm and dry, too. Remember--German Shepherds were bred to be, well, shepherds, and they'd need to adapt to work in a variety of different conditions...including snow!

Keeping Dogs Safe in the Snow

As carefree as Charlie and his dad are while romping in the snow, there are a few essential safety tips to keep in mind whenever your four-legged friend is out in the elements. Make sure they have access to shelter, for example, either by setting up an insulated dog house or installing a dog door.

Smaller dogs and lean dogs (like Greyhounds and whippets) may need additional cold weather protection, including but not limited to dog sweaters, rain jackets, and booties for their paws. Ice and de-icing chemicals can both be irritating to a dog's paws, so be sure to keep an eye out for any signs of paw discomfort.

Even if you have a big dog who loves being outdoors in the snow, though, no furry friend should be left outside to face the elements. As much fun as Charlie is having with his dad, he'll be ready for indoor cuddles with Mom before we know it!
