It’s been announced that the British singer George Michael was laid to rest a private funeral in London on Wednesday (March 29th).

On Christmas day, the sad news came that “Careless Whisper” singer George Michael had passed away aged 53. Following the singer’s death, heaps of tributes began to pour in from friends, including Sir Elton John, Mariah Carey, and Madonna, while Michael’s partner released a heartbreaking statement about his passing.

Despite passing away in December, however, George Michael’s cause of death was undetermined, and it was only at the beginning of this month (March 8th) that the official coroner’s report declared that the singer had died of natural causes.

Now it’s been announced that George Michael’s funeral took place yesterday, and we’re sending all our thoughts to his friends and family.

In a statement, representatives for the late-singer confirmed that he’d been laid to rest at an intimate ceremony in his home city of London, England.

“We can confirm that the funeral of the singer George Michael took place today. Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved son, brother and friend,” the statement read. “George Michael’s family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support. We ask that the family’s wish for privacy be respected so that they can continue to live their lives privately, away from any media intrusion. No further details will be released.”

According to PEOPLE, a source confirmed that Michael had been buried at Highgate Cemetery next to his mother Lesley, who passed away 20 years ago.

Following his death many of the philanthropic acts emerged that George Michael had partaken in over the years, including paying for a woman’s IVF treatment and working anonymously at a homeless shelter.

Over nearly 40 years George Michael’s sold 100 million albums, and his music touched legions of fans. He will be greatly missed.
