George Clooney’s Omega Speedmaster Is Made Out of Moon Gold

Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we'll track the rarest, wildest, and most covetable watches spotted on celebrities.

The Omega Speedmaster has been on an extraordinary journey over the past 50 years. That trip starts, of course, with its maiden voyage to the moon aboard the wrists of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. But this week the watch made it onto a real star—heyo!—when George Clooney strapped on a 50th anniversary, 18-carat-gold edition of the Speedmaster. The specially formulated gold is meant to imitate the cheesy shade of yellow the moon turns on particularly ominous, werewolf-awakening nights. It was a particularly good week for A-plus-list celebrities flexing their watches: in addition to Clooney, Alex Rodriguz, Sylvester Stallone, Jay-Z, and Ellen DeGeneres all showed off awesome timepieces.

Alex Rodriguez’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Rodriguez sports one of the most sought-after Rolex models in the world right now. Ever since a “Paul Newman” Daytona owned by Newman himself smashed watch auction records in late 2017, the racing-inspired model has been particularly hot. Rodriguez’s watch, while not a “Paul Newman,” has the iconic black-and-white “Panda” dial. That detail alone makes A-Rod’s Daytona worth drooling over.

George Clooney’s Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine Gold Limited Edition

The first astronauts who went to the moon were given watches after completing their mission: a few months after returning from space, at a dinner organized by Omega, they were presented with gold editions of their timepieces. (They already had their NASA-issued Speedmasters on their trip to the moon.) 50 years later, Omega’s recreated those gold watches and produced just over 1,000 of them—and Clooney owns one of them.

Jay-Z’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

Hov gave his $2.5 million sapphire Richard Mille a break earlier this week to take his blacked-out Royal Oak for a spin. It might not have a case that took 3,000 hours to make, but the black ceramic Royal Oak is no slouch. This is The Black Album of watches: besides the obvious colorway similarities, they’re both undeniable classics.

Ellen DeGeneres’s Patek Philippe Nautilus

Last year, America’s most lovable daytime television host Ellen Degeneres released a stand-up special called Relatable, which made mention of, among other things, her massive house, army of handlers, and first-class flying habits. Think of this $45,930 stainless steel Patek Nautilus as an extension of Degeneres’s special: just another way for her to flex on us in a big way.

Sylvester Stallone’s Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph 5691P

Sylvester Stallone continues to show off his expansive collection of Patek Philippe watches. The latest is this $147,420 platinum Patek Phillippe with a ring of diamonds set around the bezel. The man who built his career on playing the toughest, bad-guy-sluggingest dudes in the universe uses the cash he's earned to buy the prettiest watches possible.

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Omega Speedmaster Professional “Starmus”

The word “rare” gets thrown around in the watch world a lot, but Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Omega Speedmaster actually lives up to that description. Omega gave the famous astrophysicist this watch in 2017 after he won the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication. Omega doesn’t even sell the watch—winning the award is the only way to get this special-edition “Starmus” with a gold case and black dial. So, kids, if you’re seriously smitten with this watch, start brushing up on those science textbooks.

Luka Sabbat’s Patek Philippe Nautilus

Luka Sabbat is sporting a big-time watch while traipsing around the Cannes Film Festival this year. In every shot I’ve seen of him, he’s wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus. Not content to just have any standard-issue timepiece, Sabbat followed in Virgil Abloh’s footsteps and did the unthinkable: customized his Nautilus. While Abloh completely blacked-out his piece, Sabbat went in the opposite direction, creating a blindingly bright watch covered in diamonds.

Why are classic timepieces suddenly more sought-after, more Instagrammed, and more valuable than ever before? The answer has a lot to do with auctioneer extraordinaire Aurel Bacs.
