Gentle Pit Bull Becomes Shelter's 'Greeter Dog' While Waiting for Loving Forever Home

Living with an animal rescue can be difficult for any dog, but it helps immensely when they have a friend. Playing in the shelter's yard with new friends or going on walks with volunteers can be the highlight of these dogs' days, and it's easy to see why. Just about anything is more fun than waiting around in a kennel all day!

And that's precisely why organizations like the Dog Coalition of LA are so important. This nonprofit pairs foster parents with in-need shelter dogs from Southern California shelters, but before these dogs can go to their temporary homes, they have to meet someone very important.

His name is Gumby, and he's a 9-year-old adoptable Bully boy! He's the official greeter dog for the Los Angeles dog rescue, and he helps volunteers gauge every new dog's social skills and play style. Very few dogs are candidates for this important position, and it's hard to believe that this uber-friendly dude is still looking for an adopter of his own.

Aww! Gumby seems like a big teddy bear, and it's easy to see why he's the perfect greeter dog for the Dog Coalition of LA. Despite this Pit Bull's outgoing nature, he's patient, polite, and tolerant enough to take meet and greets slowly. Plus, he doesn't move fast enough to startle nervous new friends.

Naturally, tons of commenters are rallying in support of this precious senior dog. After all, it's about time he gets a happy ending of his own! Although he's pampered and loved by his foster owner, Gumby would love nothing more than to have a home of his very own. And after helping so many dogs transition to rescue--he deserves the promotion!

This angel boy is nine years old and wants nothing more than to be near his loved ones. He still loves short walks, but at his older age, he'll definitely curl up for a nap immediately after. His rescuers think he would thrive in most home environments, too, including with kids and other pets.

What Does a Greeter Dog Do?

When a dog arrives at a shelter or rescue, they'll eventually need to undergo a series of evaluations. This helps volunteers understand more about them, including how they interact with other dogs, so they can provide the best rescue experience for them. To do this, however, they'll have to meet another dog!

The dog chosen to be the 'greeter dog' has to be tolerant, calm, and easygoing. This way, the entire focus of the interaction can be on the new dog's reaction! It can take an extremely patient and confident dog to be a greeter dog, however, and it's uncommon to find someone who fits the bill as well as Gumby does.

As much as his rescue friends want him to find home, they're sure going to miss him and his friendly nature when he does finally meet his perfect family.
