General Mills Recalls Several Varieties of Gold Medal Flour

General Mills flagged a warning for consumers about possible Salmonella contamination in certain varieties of its Gold Medal flour products.

In an announcement distributed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday, April 28, General Mills issued a voluntary national recall of some two, five, and 10-pound bags of its Gold Medal Unbleached and Bleached All Purpose Flour with a "better if used by" date of March 27, 2024, and March 28, 2024.

As reported in the announcement, "The recall is being issued for the potential presence of Salmonella Infantis, which was discovered during sampling of the five-pound bag product."

This recall only affects the two specified date codes of Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour in two, five and 10-pound bags, as well as the two, five and 10-pound bags of Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour. "All other types of Gold Medal Flour are not affected by this recall," the company stressed.

Healthy persons infected with the bacteria often experience nausea, diarrhea, fever and abdominal pains. Officials said that symptoms typically start within six hours to six days after infection and can last four to seven days, "any consumers concerned about an illness should contact a physician." There are an estimated 1.2 million cases of Salmonella in the U.S. annually, per the CDC.

General Mills also reminded consumers that flour is not considered a ready-to-eat ingredient. Both the FDA and CDC recommend refraining from consuming any raw products made with flour.

As a result of the possible contamination, consumers are advised to check their pantries and dispose of any product affected by the recall. Those who have had to discard products due to the recall may contact General Mills Relations at 1-800-230-8103.
