  • General Hospital star Kirsten Storms, 37, revealed to her followers last week that she underwent brain surgery.

  • The operation removed a “very large cyst” from the lower portion of her brain.

  • The cyst was not cancerous and Storms is now on the road to recovery.

Last week, General Hospital and Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century star Kirsten Storms revealed some shocking news to her fans on Instagram. After experiencing some concerning health problems for a few years, the 37-year-old actress underwent brain surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

It all started when she became plagued with some “random health issues” which she first attributed to her age and medications. Then, she began experiencing neck pain that she couldn’t ignore, which she connected to her frequent migraines. “My amazingly thorough orthopedist ordered an MRI of my head just to be on the ‘safe side’—even though that isn’t his area of expertise,” she wrote, calling him a “truly great doctor.”

The scan revealed a jarring discovery. “We stumbled upon a rather large, very full of fluid, cyst that was attached to the lower portion of [my] brain,” she wrote.

On her Instagram Story, the star went into more detail, noting that it was a “very large cyst that had split into two.” She also wanted to make it very clear that, although the finding was scary and required surgery, it was not cancerous.

“What they had to drain and remove was not cancer—I want to clarify that right now before the internet goes crazy wild with rumors about this,” she said, per People. “I had a very large cyst that had split into two and the doctor said it was like so full the pressure was very noticeable when they opened up my skull, sounds so weird.”

Now that the operation is over, she’s sending thanks to her fans and family for all the support and is taking time to heal.

“I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it,” she wrote. “I’m not gonna lie, brain surgery had me nervous, but I’m immensely thankful to my family, friends, and incredible ‘work family’ who have been supportive, kind, and loving during a time when I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions. Work is a great place to be every day and for the two months leading up to my surgery I found a lot of comfort being around the people I’ve worked beside for so many years. I’m excited to get back to it after my recovery.”

While on the mend, Storms plans to tackle some knitting projects, which she pictured in her post, and she’s feeling super optimistic about them.

“Fun fact: I now firmly believe the new plates in my brain will give me some sort of special ability,” she wrote. “Fingers crossed I can suddenly knit a sweater in 1 day. Ooo maybe 1 hour. 😮”
