'General Hospital' and 'Saved by the Bell' Alum Dead at 90

Veteran TV actor and daytime soap opera star Gerald Castillo has died. He was 90.

Per a statement shared by his wife, Dayna Quinn-Castillo, the actor died at his home in Houston, Texas, on May 4.

When she confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, May 24, she remembered him as "a charismatic and insightful director who would jingle the change in his pocket while he pondered a scene, then leap onto the stage to work out the blocking or whisper in an actor’s ear." Castillo was born on Dec. 23, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois.

Best known to fans for his roles on General Hospital and Saved by the Bell, his first big role was a two-episode stint on The Jeffersons.

He went on to appear in hit shows like M*A*S*H, Night Court, Hill Street Blues, Dallas, and Dragnet, before securing the role of Major Slater–the father of AC Slater (played by Mario Lopez)–on the NBC comedy series in 1989.

A few years later, in 1992, Castillo was cast as Judge Davis Wagner in a recurring 15-episode role on the ABC daytime soap General Hospital, a position he held until 1994.

His presence was felt in Hollywood, too, with the actor portraying Lt. Matteos in the 1995 thriller Above Suspicion—written by William H. Macy, Jerry Lazarus and Steven Schachter—alongside Kim Cattrall, Christopher Reeve, and Joe Mantegna.

Through 2012, Castillo continued to grace both the big and small screens, securing parts in television's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Profiler, and full-length feature films 2084 (2009) and Troubled Child (2012). He also worked as a stage director for productions across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Castillo was predeceased by his daughter Lisa and survived by his wife of 36 years, his twin brother Bernie Castillo, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
