These Gen Z-ers are using ‘ribbon hack’ to tighten their jeans: ‘Okay this is so cute i’m obsessed’
Following a summer of embracing girlhood and hyper-femininity, it seems these Gen Z creators have found yet another functional and fashionable way to integrate ribbons into their daily wardrobe.
In the last month, TikTok creators have been hopping on the “ribbon hack” to tighten their oversized jeans for a better fit. The fix is quite simple: You take some ribbon, weave it through the two belt loops on one side of your pants, and then pull and tie a little bow. You then repeat this on the other side.
Given the fact that ribbons were super trendy at New York Fashion Week, Gen Z’s obsession with the decorative material isn’t all that surprising. (It’s popularity is due largely to designer Sandy Liang, whose design aesthetic has become practically synonymous with the viral “balletcore” trend.) As Vogue Singapore put it, the “ribbonaissance” is alive and well, especially among this generation.
The end result, as demonstrated by these creators, is a pair of pants that not only cinch at the waist but boast dainty ribbon details.
This isn’t the first time Gen Z creators have demonstrated their creativity when it comes to channeling trends on a budget. Last month, TikTok user Bri (@canyoubrilieveit) documented the process of adorning her Dr. Martens boots with charms and chains. She was inspired by the recent collaboration between the British footwear brand and American designer Marc Jacobs.
And when Liang debuted her collection of bags with BAGGU, several thrifty Gen Z fashion girlies opted to DIY the look for less. Their solution? Attaching ribbon bows to their own bags in Liang’s signature style.
“I love how this hack is useful AND cute!” @its_avgoula wrote in response to Olivia’s TikTok.
“Okay this is so cute i’m obsessed,” @s0rrymissjackson commented on Fortune’s video.
