Gen Z is asking older generations if they remember how to skip, and the results are hilarious

Many an adult remembers being asked to show off their skipping prowess as part of their kindergarten skills test, but skipping may be a skill that is lost over the years. So a new TikTok trend is putting older adults to the test with a #skipchallenge that asks, “Can they still skip?”

The results aren’t very promising, as they seem to show a dismal lack of skipping skills in older adults.

Skipping can be a fun childhood experience, but it’s also a skill that doctors sometimes use to assess neurological function in children. Skipping might look simple, but it actually involves a lot of coordination, proper nerve function and motor skills, so there is more to a skip than first meets the eye.

“The dr did a neurological exam on me for my migraines. Skipping was part of it. It was so hard!!!!” said @motherofcatsandferrets.

Losing the ability to skip seems to be a common occurrence as people get older, but why? It could be that skipping is associated with children, so adults just don’t do it. But skipping is also an athletic skill for adults — a 2019 study in Gait & Posture found that skipping puts a greater pressure load on knee joints and burns 30% more calories than running at the same pace in adults. In other words, skipping is hard for adults.

The results of the skip challenge were mixed. Some older adults whipped out a perfect skip — while others struggled.

Others appeared to need a little reminder before tapping into their long-lost skipping skills, and some failed despite putting forth impressive efforts.

“WHY DOESN’T ANYONE REMEMBER HOW TO SKIP ANYMORE IM DEAD,” commented @hummusbirrd.

And while some people may have successfully relearned the ability to skip, Paw Paw Steve might be a lost cause, albeit a fan favorite:

In the comment sections of different skip challenge videos, people admitted that they, too, have lost the ability to skip.

“I knew I forgot how to skip when my son asked me to do it and couldn’t,” said @pzaget719.

“I remember me and my sister forgot how to skip when we were younger so we spent the afternoon relearning how to skip lol,” added @ivy131415.

The news that people can lose the ability to skip also seemed to be news to many horrified commenters.

“This is freaking hilarious. How do you forget how to skip?!” laughed @lauramonnens1.

Some also viewed the skip challenge as a warning to start now to preserve their skipping skills for future generations.

“Omw to practice skipping so my body doesn’t forget,” said @sofia_lynch_.
