Gemini Man Is a Violent Interpretation of the Spider-Man Pointing Meme

Will Smith stars—twice—in the newest trailer for the Ang Lee-directed movie that couldn't exist 20 years ago.

Zodiac followers, rejoice: After years of being relegated to listing your astrology sign on dating app profiles, finally Hollywood has looked to the stars above and recognized your presence with the upcoming film Gemini Man.

In the new trailer for the Ang Lee-directed flick, a present-day Will Smith plays a highly effective assassin named Henry Brogen, who alternates between being chased and chasing a younger, cloned version of himself named Junior. The real-life Smith did act out Junior's lines, but his fresh-faced doppelgänger is otherwise completely and totally digitized, which, ugh, such a Gemini move, am I right?

Junior is instructed to kill his older counterpart by Clay Varris (a.k.a. Clive Owen, a Libra). Varris, from all indications, had a prior relationship with the original Brogen, but that relationship soured because of Brogen's baggage (presumably caring about others, a big no-no in the hired killer business). In the trailer, as guns go off and things explode, Jaden Smith's "Icon" can be heard, which is a nice touch. Rooting hard for the inclusion of Smith senior's "Just the Two of Us" for trailer No. 3.

Gemini Man has been floating around for multiple decades while the proper technology developed to turn the Spider-Man pointing meme into a living, breathing thing—its Wikipedia page even says the film "went through development hell for nearly 20 years," which I understand is a real industry term or whatever, but it reads as a funny unattributed assertion about an inanimate object's plight. People recently reported on how Lee told Smith to handle his Junior acting scenes, and if you ever stayed up until 3 a.m. watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on Nick at Nite, this quote will break your heart: “[Lee was] like, ‘I need you to act less good,'” said Smith. “He would show me some of my old performances of things and would say, ‘Look at this, for a reference. That’s not good. I need you to do that.'”

At the end of the trailer, Brogen asks Junior, "What if somebody actually knew what we really are?" Is this a reference to both of them being mercenaries? Probably. Could it also be an acknowledgment that they're both embarrassed to admit they're Geminis? Reader, you'll have to catch the movie when it's released on October 11 to find out.
