Gee Atherton, the Welsh downhill legend, suffered a major crash at Red Bull Rampage this afternoon. Not much information is available about the incident, but we do know that he was quickly attended to by medical staff and airlifted to a hospital shortly after the incident.

Here is a clip of the crash. Watch it at your own discretion.

All we have to say is that we are gutted to see the Geeman out for Rampage this season and hope for a speedy recovery. He has a penchant for sending the biggest and most extreme gaps he can find and this time, the drop bit back.

It is always disappointing to see a rider go out in practice for Rampage, but with the level of riding that is standard at the event these days, it has almost become expected.

In fact, this instance is reminiscent of Kyle Strait's crash in practice last season that broke his back and sidelined him for almost a year.

Here was that crash. Also, watch at your own discretion.

Every year the question is raised after crashes like this whether the event should be allowed to continue with the bar being raised every year like it is. Critics say it is only a matter of time until someone dies at Rampage and supporters retort with the argument that it is the rider's own choice to be there.

Regardless, our hearts go out to Gee, and everyone here at BikeMag wishes him a speedy recovery.
