GE Recalls Hundreds of Thousands of Washing Machines Due to Fire Hazard

From Good Housekeeping

GE is recalling three models of top-loading washing machines due to an electrical malfunction that causes them to catch fire, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. To date, GE has received 71 reports of washers burning or catching fire, including three reports of fires that resulted in about $129,000 in property damage. Luckily, no injuries have been reported.

The models affected are part of GE's Profile series, and all washers have "GE Profile" clearly printed on the front. The washers were sold at Best Buy, Lowe's, Sears, and the Home Depot from June 2003 through October 2011, priced between $900 and $1,400. The CPSC reports that about 222,000 units will be recalled. If you have one of these clothes washers, you should stop using it and unplug your appliance immediately. You can contact GE to get a free repair by visiting their website or calling their toll-free number.

Carolyn Forte, Director of the Home Appliances, Cleaning Products, and Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, says this recall is an important reminder to keep laundry areas clean, lint-free, and free of any flammable materials.
