‘Your Gas Guzzler Kills’: Climate Activists Deflate Tires on Dozens of Cars in Boston

A group of climate activists has claimed responsibility for puncturing the tires of at least 43 SUVs in the Beacon Hill suburb of Boston and attaching notes to the vehicles informing owners that “your gas guzzler kills.”

The group, known as the Tyre Extinguishers, acknowledged responsibility in a blog post published on Thursday, the night following the vandalism.

“The group took this action to render the large greenhouse gas emitting vehicles unusable, directly preventing the outpouring of emission from the vehicles into our atmosphere which further contribute to climate change and air pollution,” the official statement reads.

The organization added that “SUVs are a dangerous and unnecessary environmental atrocity, especially in city environments where there are sustainable transport options available to everyone.”

Tyre Extinguishers further clarified that climate activists had taken “this action in Beacon Hill as it is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Boston to own a house.”

“It is not an exaggeration to say that the richest individuals in the world are causing the current and future deaths of the less fortunate and less developed nations and people,” the letter concluded.

After wrecking dozens of SUVs, the climate vigilantes attached notes to car dashboards explaining: “We have deflated one or more of your tires. You’ll be angry, but don’t take it personally. It’s not you, it’s your car.”

One victim told a local Boston news outlet that a neighbor was prevented from commuting to his firehouse because of the violence. “My parents didn’t need to go anywhere immediately this morning, but I know another person in the neighborhood who’s a firefighter and couldn’t get to the fire station,” the woman.

“There are plenty of people who work at the hospital and couldn’t get to work on time.”

Beneath the organization’s statement was a brief biographical note stating that Tyre Extinguishers has members in 15 countries and “have deflated more than 10,000 SUV tires since March 2022.”

The group has stated that Wednesday’s vandalism accounted for its eighteenth action in 2023.

The Boston Police Department confirmed that ten victims have been interviewed so far but no arrests have yet been made.
