Gary Woodland's Family Gives Update After Golfer's Brain Surgery

Gary Woodland's family is providing an update on the golfer's health status after undergoing brain surgery at the start of the week.

On Monday, Sept. 18, Woodland had surgery to remove a lesion on his brain, and now the PGA Tour star is resting and recovering, according to a statement made on behalf of his family.

"After a long surgery today, the majority of the tumor has been removed and he is currently resting," read a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram later in the day on Monday.

"At this time, the family requests space and privacy to be together," the post continued. "Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers as he gets started on the road to recovery."

The post signed off with, "Team GW."

The update comes just weeks after Woodland, 39, first announced his diagnosis on social media, revealing at the time that he had received the news a few months prior.

Despite initially "trying to treat symptoms with medication," Woodland explained that "after consulting with multiple specialists and discussing with my family, we've made the decision that surgery to remove the lesion is the best course of action."

"I'm in good spirits with my family and team by my side and so thankful for the love and support of everyone," he concluded at the time.

Since announcing the news, Woodland has been met with an outpouring of support from the golf community, including messages from fellow professional golfers Justin Thomas, Justin Rose and Tony Finau.

Olympic champion Michael Phelps also left a note on Woodland's post last month, dropping a couple prayer hand emojis in the comment section.
