Trisha Yearwood and viewers tuning into Inside Studio G were treated to a sweet surprise for her birthday: Garth Brooks' first-ever attempt at baking a cake.

If you're wondering what it's like to present a birthday cake to the host of Trisha's Southern Kitchen, we're here to tell you Brooks seemed a bit nervous.

"It wasn't, it wasn't good," Brooks said before realizing that Yearwood was about to appear on camera with the cake. "Trust me. It was pretty hideous. Pretty horrible."

Next thing you know, Yearwood walked into view holding the cake before her. She agreed with Brooks that it wouldn't matter if the cake was any good—he was going to get points for trying. After she was serenaded with a rousing round of "Happy Birthday," Yearwood insisted on tasting her gift, despite her husband's pleas to wait until the cameras stopped rolling.

"I'm not just being nice—this is really good," Yearwood pronounced, especially pleased with the unexpected touch of peanut butter in the chocolate frosting. "I'm very impressed. ...It's probably the sweetest gift you have ever given me for my birthday."

Now, the cake didn't exactly look like the work of a professional—Brooks admitted to trying to ice one layer while holding the other in his hand until it fell apart. And he did forget to put icing in between the layers. But it was a good showing for a first attempt, even if he did use a boxed brownie mix.

The two joked that he has a new cooking show on the horizon, and we're down for it. Brooks has already shared his first baking tip: Add an extra egg to your brownie mix and increase the oil slightly for a more cake-like confection that "still gets the great brownie taste."

Yearwood turned 59 this year, and by all appearances, Brooks is as in love with "the queen" as ever.

"I think she looks more beautiful than she ever has," Brooks said.
