Garth Brooks is half of one of country music's most famous couples, a seven-time winner of the CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year, and the best-selling solo artist in U.S. history. With such an impressive list of accomplishments, it comes as no surprise that the singer is the subject of a new, two-part television special.

Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On features a collection of unfiltered interviews that gives fans a glimpse at the musical icon's career and personal life—including his previous marriage to Sandy Mahl.

During a recent press junket for the documentary in New York City, Garth admitted that his ex-wife shared things about their relationship he "didn’t hear" until now.

"What really surprised me was Sandy, the girls' mom," he said. "She was phenomenal."

Garth and Sandy got married in 1986, several years before his debut album skyrocketed him to fame. The former couple shares three daughters: Taylor, 27, August, 25, and Allie, 23. After spending more than a decade together—all during the height of Garth's career—he and Sandy separated in 1999 and finalized their divorce in 2001.

"[I was] gone so much on the road [during our marriage], there were things I guess she was [trying to tell] me that I didn’t hear until this biography," Garth admitted. "It’s rare you get to hear the other side. I just saw her, and I think I hugged her harder than I ever have now that I know things that either I didn’t hear or that she didn’t say until now."

Following his split with Sandy, Garth quickly found love with Trisha Yearwood, who also lent a hand in raising the former couple's daughters.

“It was good, [she] helped me out a lot. She didn’t have children either. So we were kind of blind leading the blind,” he said, adding that now, “They’re the perfect blend of their mama and me with Trisha’s influence on them."

Sounds like it was all meant to be!

Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On premieres on December 2 and December 3 at 9 p.m. ET on A&E.
