  • Garth Brooks sang a cover of “Shallow” from A Star is Born with Kelly Clarkson.

  • Brooks admitted he never sang the song with anyone but his wife, Trisha Yearwood.

  • Brooks and Yearwood first sang the song on a Facebook Live show that went viral in March. It was so adored that they recorded it for Brooks’ latest album, FUN.

If you’ve been following Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood’s series of quarantined live-streamed concerts, you know that their cover of “Shallow” from A Star is Born went viral after their March 24 Facebook Live show. It was so adored, in fact, that they recorded it for Garth’s latest album, FUN. So it kind of came as a surprise that Brooks sang the song with Kelly Clarkson during his Dec. 14 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson show.

Before Brooks strummed them in, he explained how his “moment” with the song was simply born of a fan’s request. So he and Yearwood ran with it. He then asked Clarkson if she wanted to sing it with him, and she happily obliged. “I wanna sing it with you,” she said. “Sorry Trisha! You’re not here and if you were here, I’d sing three-part!”

Both versions of the track (all three, really) are incredible, but Clarkson offered a new warmth to the powerful duet. They sang an abbreviated version—just the first verse and a chorus—but it was enough to give everyone goosebumps, including Brooks. (He didn’t want to admit that, though.)

After they wrapped up the performance, he actually found a camera to lock eyes with and speak directly to his wife. “Ms. Yearwood, I didn’t enjoy that,” he said with a stern look. But he was only kidding. “That was fabulous. Oh my god, that was fabulous,” he broke out in laughter. “Woo!” he continued, fanning himself.

Clarkson wasn’t phased by the moment at all. “I’m sorry Trisha,” she quipped. “But I enjoyed every second of it!” And “Shallow” wasn’t their only duet of the day. The pair also sang shortened versions of “Mama Tried,” “Piano Man,” “American Pie,” and Brooks’ song, “In Another’s Eyes,” which is very special to him.

“I’ve never sang that with anybody but Ms. Yearwood,” Brooks told Clarkson, who promptly freaked out. “Oh my god, really?!” she exclaimed, before jumping up and screaming, “Oh my god!! I didn’t know that. Win!”

It turns out, fans loved the collaboration as much as the Voice judge did. “I thought I was sick of [‘Shallow’] until this. This was so beautiful,” one fan commented on YouTube. “What better Christmas present than Garth and Kelly singing ❤,” another wrote. “Okay this means we need a Garth and Kelly duet!!!” another added.

Well… Kelly does have an album coming up!
