  • Game of Thrones star Kristofer Hivju, who portrayed Tormund Giantsbane in the hit series, revealed he tested positive for COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, on Instagram.

  • Hivju and his family are isolating in Norway, his home country.

  • Norway has over 1,000 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the World Health Organization.

Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju, better known as Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones, has tested positive for COVID-19, he revealed in an Instagram post this afternoon. He and his family are in Norway "self-isolating at home for as long as it takes,” he added. “We are in good health - I only have mild symptoms of a cold.”

The actor, 41, also encouraged his followers to look out for one another and take precautionary measures to keep other people safe as the pandemic spreads, such as staying indoors and avoiding large crowds, so the number of cases doesn't surpass the healthcare system capacity and lead to a "crisis at our hospitals." There are over 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Norway, and over 167,000 worldwide, according to the World Health Organization's March 16 situation report.

“There are people at higher risk for who this virus might be a devastating diagnosis, so I urge all of you to be extremely careful; wash your hands, keep 1,5 meters distance from others, go in quarantine; just do everything you can to stop the virus from spreading,” Hivju wrote.

“Together we can fight this virus and avert a crisis at our hospitals,” he continued. “Please take care of each other, keep your distance, and stay healthy! Please visit your country's Center for Disease Control's website, and follow the regulations for staying safe and protecting not just yourselves, but our entire community, and especially those at risk like the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions.”

Hivju is one of the latest celebrities to openly speak about testing positive for coronavirus, following others like Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson.
