'Game of Thrones' Scripts Show Bran Actually Wasn't Totally Useless During Battle of Winterfell
One of the developments that made the Game of Thrones finale so unsatisfying was seeing Bran, the surviving Stark who who seemed to contribute least to the fight against the Army of the Dead and the war with the Lannisters, win the throne. Sansa proved an able queen. Arya killed the Night King. Jon, god love him, didn’t accomplish much for most of the season but damn if he didn’t look like he was trying. And then at the end he killed a budding tyrant! All three put major accomplishments on the board. Unfortunately, in the end, Bran, who spent the season staring into the distance and occasionally saying something vague, ended up king of pretty much everything.
But Insider took a peak at the Season Eight scripts, which now live at LA’s Writers Guild Foundation library. And apparently Thrones writers did have Bran do something during the Battle of Winterfell, offering a bit of redemption to the character’s general uselessness towards the end of the series.
As we saw in the episode, during the fight against the undead, Bran was guarded by Theon in the godswood, baiting the Night King into coming to kill him. At one point during the battle, Bran says “I’m going to go now,” and then his eyes roll up into the back of his head, indicating that he’s warging into one of the ravens flying overhead. And that’s it—that appeared to be his big contribution.
But Insider reports that the script reveals that Bran actually warged into a whole bunch of birds, and that “a massive flock of ravens… converge on Winterfell from all sides, all piloted by Bran.” This means that Bran was monitoring the action from above, and rather than just being a sitting duck, and was probably able to tell just when the Night King would come for him.
It doesn’t exactly seem like enough to merit ruling a whole kingdom, but hey, it’s better than nothing.
