THE WORLD OF Westeros continues to expand on screen. In addition to the second season of House of the Dragon, which is due to begin airing this summer, HBO is getting ready to begin production on another Game of Thrones prequel series, due to be released next year. Its cumbersome title? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

"A century before the events of Game of Thrones, there was Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg," reads the official synopsis. "Executive produced by George R. R. Martin, Ira Parker, Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has received a straight to series order."

What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight about?

The new show is inspired by a series of spinoff novellas by George R.R. Martin that take place in Westeros a century before the main events of A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series on which Game of Thrones was based. Originally referred to among fans as the Tales of Dunk and Egg, these stories followed the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, a young man who calls himself Egg, who is secretly Prince Aegon V, a member of the Targaryen royal family.

The first novella is The Hedge Knight, and was collectively published along with the subsequent two stories, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, as a book entitled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — which also happens to be the name of an episode of the final season of Game of Thrones.

Much like House of the Dragon, which depicts the civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons," A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will fill in an earlier chapter of Westerosi history and the role that a Targaryen played in it. And it's just one project in a whole slate of planned prequels and spinoffs: another prequel set much earlier and focusing on the Targaryen's arrival in Westeros from Valyria and subsequent conquest of the continent is also in the works at HBO, as is an animated series about the seafaring exploits of Corlys Velaryon.

Who will be in the cast?

There have been no casting announcements for the series yet, but whichever actors end up winning the roles of Dunk and Egg can expect their lives to change. The original Game of Thrones series turned many of its previously unknown stars into A-list celebrities, and House of the Dragon has proven to be a similar career springboard: Milly Alcock, who played the younger Princess Rhaenyra, has just been cast as Supergirl in the newly rebooted DCU.

When is the release date?

The series is already in pre-production, and according to HBO's David Zaslav, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms "will premiere in late 2025 on Max."
