A “Game of Thrones” prequel could still be coming, but not for awhile

While most of you are still grieving the news that the final season of Game of Thrones won’t return until 2019, we have good news and bad news about the rumored Game of Thrones prequel in development. The good news? It sounds like a GoT prequel is very much a possibility.

The bad news? Just like the final season of GoT, we’ll have to wait awhile before a prequel might premiere. So…mark your calendars for 2020? (And that’s at the very earliest…sigh.)

At the ongoing Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena, California, HBO programming president Casey Bloys shared a bit of insight about the first of several potential Game of Thrones prequels.

“If we do a pilot and series, nothing is going to air on HBO until at least a year after the final season,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re not doing a final season and then, ‘Following it at 11 p.m.’ … .”

While this isn’t *exactly* breaking news, actual work for a Game of Thrones prequel has definitely begun, Bloys confirmed.

“I’ve seen some exciting material,” Bloys said. “We have really great writers working on these; it’s very exciting. But there’s no timetable. Not everybody is on the same schedule, so I’ve seen different versions of different things that are potentially exciting. But there’s no timetable about when a decision would be made about any of them.”

Say it ain’t so! We need a Game of Thrones prequel, like, right now.

Few details have been released since showrunners — and Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin — announced the potential for five prospective prequels back in April. What we do know is that in addition to Martin himself, HBO has enlisted five of its existing GoT writers to stay on for future shows set in the same world (albeit at different times).

Bloys also said that while the prequels are still in development, HBO has no plans for any future remakes. In other words, they’re never going to pull a Roseanne and say Ned Stark didn’t actually die.

“There’s no revival, reboot, spinoff talk,” Blogs told The Hollywood Reporter.
