Game of Thrones' Kit Harington Opens Up About His 'Gender Fluid' Upbringing
Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has opened up about his "gender fluid" upbringing as he also reflected on wanting to explore different portrayals of masculinity in his future projects.
During an interview with The Telegraph, Kit admitted that he "idolised" his mother, former playwright Deborah Jane Catesby, before explaining that she also introduced him and his brother to gender politics as they were growing up.
"I asked for a Mighty Max and she bought me a Polly Pocket," he said. "I asked for an Action Man and I got a doll–it was very gender fluid from the word go. And I went with it."
He went on to discuss his views on masculinity, adding that he doesn't want to play the role of a "silent", "heroic" character like his Game of Thrones alter-ego Jon Snow again.
"I feel that emotionally men have a problem, a blockage, and that blockage has come from the Second World War, passed down from grandfather to father to son," he said.
"We do not speak about how we feel because it shows weakness, because it is not masculine. Having portrayed a man who was silent, who was heroic, I feel going forward that is a role I don't want to play any more.
"It is not a masculine role that the world needs to see much more of."
The actor's latest role in the second season of Netflix drama Criminal sees him play an estate agent named Alex, who is accused of rape by Sarah, a junior member of his team, and is now being questioned by the police.
The new season also features Catastrophe's Sharon Horgan, Wanderlust's Sophie Okonedo and The Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar, with each character's story being examined in its own episode.
