Game of Thrones Beauty: Khaleesi’s Braid Evolution

The Season 6 finale of Game of Thrones is almost here, and we’re prepping with all the braid tutorials we can get our hands on for our viewing party. But nobody can upstage the Khaleesi. Daenerys Targaryen’s braids have gotten increasingly intricate as the show goes on and as she becomes more powerful. She’s like the GoT Samson – and her latest hairstyles are nothing short of amazing. We’re pretty sure you need to be a master basket weaver before attempting braids like these. The show’s hair designer, Kevin Alexander, ensures that Daenerys’s braids suit her so well that it almost seems effortless, but make no mistake – maintaining that mane is a full-time job. Literally.
Daenerys has a wig for when she’s clean, another for when she’s out in the desert, and a third on rotate. The light color and porousness have to be accounted for at all times, and when everything goes up in smoke, it’s really bad news. “If there’s any smoke scene, because [Daenerys’s hair is] such a beautiful white and it’s quite porous, she only needs to be near a fire and by the end of the day she looks like she’s gone grey,” Alexander tells Fashionista. “If we left all that white hair loose in the desert…ugh. When we’re designing the hair we have to think about all of that stuff, and the cameras and the conditions.” But it’s all worth it in the end. “Those plaits have become very much her,” says Alexander. “It’s amazing how much it’s influenced the fashion world.”
