Gabrielle Union Just Called Out a Headline That Referred to Her as 'Dwyane Wade's Wife'

The news site has since apologized.

On Monday, Gabrielle Union and her husband, Dwyane Wade, donated $200,000 to March for Our Lives. For the most part, articles on the donation cited both the actress and the Miami Heat player in the headline. But when Miami TV station WSVN-7 reported the story, they ran with this headline on Twitter: ".@DwyaneWade, wife donates $200,000 to student-ran gun control rally." (Never mind that there were more than enough characters left to fit in Union's handle.) Immediately, Twitter users came to Union's defense, bombarding the account with GIFs, corrections, and the general sentiment that people only knew about Wade because of Gabrielle Union.

And then the headline was called out by Union herself. "When they let you know what they think of you. I have a name," she wrote.

The outlet has since apologized to Union—an apology publicly accepted by Wade on his Twitter—and corrected the headline so both famous (and generous) donors are named. Still, that this sort of screw-up is happening in 2018 is both troubling and exhausting. Not to mention some headlines by other news sites that have omitted Union's name entirely, crediting just Wade with the hefty donation.

But with WSVN-7 having received a stern talking to by the entire Internet, let's focus on Union and Wade's support for March for Our Lives instead. The couple lives in South Florida, so the Parkland, Florida, shooting hit close to home for them both. "Like thousands in South Florida, we sent the boys to school in Broward County this morning…there are no words to describe the despair, horror & anger," Union tweeted on the day of the incident. "This does not have to be our collective reality. How many more? How many children must not make it home?"

A month later, Union and Wade are taking action by putting their support behind the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who organized the March 24 gun control demonstration. "Spoke to my brother @carmeloanthony & we're standing w/students from MSD. We both come from communities where gun violence is an every day occurrence. Enough is enough! On March 24th, students across the country will be in DC and in their local cities to #MarchForOurLives," Wade tweeted on Monday. "They need our help! I'm asking my NBA fam to join us in raising money to send kids from underserved communities to March….@gabunion and I will start w/ $200K for Chicago. Every dollar counts! Who else is in??
