For Gabrielle Union, becoming a mother later in life was exactly the right move. The actress, now 50, didn’t becoming a mom until her 40s — but for her, she says, that was the perfect time because it’s when she was ready to be the best mother she could be.

In a video posted to Instagram on Friday, she explained that she “became a mom at the right time” because at 46, she had healed from her past traumas so she wouldn’t pass them on to her daughter, four-year-old Kaavia James.

“People always ask, ‘Is it worth it? Having kids later in life? There’s a lot that goes into that answer,” she says in the video. “But in a nutshell: hell yeah, it’s been worth it.”

Union welcomed Kaavia via a surrogate in 2018 with her husband, 41-year-old Dwyane Wade. She’s also stepmom to Wade’s kids, 21-year-old Zaire, 16-year-old Zaya, and 9-year-old Xavier.

In her video, Union continued, “It’s changed my life in so many wondrous ways that it does make me wish I had done it earlier, just so I have even more time with Kaav. I even have more time as a mom.”

However, after reflecting, she added, “I became a mom at the right time, because I was healed. And I had committed to healing eternally, so I didn’t pass all that generational trauma onto Kaav. And had I been a day younger, even, certainly 10, 15, 20 years before, I would have passed along way too many traumatic things to my child.”

She continued, “I didn’t really get into healing from all of my traumas, healing my soul, healing my aura, if you will. I wasn’t in a place to even take care of myself, much less our little miracle. So for me, it’s absolutely worth it. She is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

In the post’s caption, Union wrote, “Choosing to heal past traumas was the best preparation for motherhood.”

This is such a refreshing take — as humans, we all carry trauma and pain from our past experiences. Learning how to address that pain in healthy ways so we don’t pass it on to our children is such a wonderful gift to give to them.
