Gabriella Papadakis Skates Through Wardrobe Malfunction During Olympic Routine

"I told myself I didn’t have a choice; I have to keep going.”

Olympic figure skaters have enough to focus on while on the ice without worrying about keeping their costumes in place. But during Sunday’s ice dance competition, French athlete Gabriella Papadakis, 22, became the second skater of this month’s winter games to have a mid-routine wardrobe malfunction.

As reported by NBC Olympics, almost immediately after beginning her short program ice dance with partner Guillaume Cizeron, a clasp holding Gabriella’s halter top seemingly came undone, leaving her entire top in a very precarious position as the pair skated and spun around the ice. Gabriella managed to keep her costume mostly in place throughout the routine; but after the skater bent her body backward in an element near the end, her top shifted slightly, revealing her nipple on live TV, as USA Today reported.

Gabriella and Guillaume both handled the mishap like total pros throughout their routine, barely letting it affect the way they twisted and twizzled. Yahoo! Sports reported that the pair received 81.93 points for that routine, placing them second behind Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir going into Tuesday’s long dance program.

But, while she didn’t show it during their incredible routine, Gabriella was visibly upset after the fact. USA Today reported that she was tearful when facing reporters, and responded that she was “not great” when asked if she was okay.

“It was was my worst nightmare happening at the Olympics,” Gabriella later said, as reported by Yahoo! Sports “It happened in the first few seconds [of the routine]. I told myself I didn’t have a choice; I have to keep going.” To get herself through the routine, Gabriella said all she could do was pray.

“When you rotate, it’s kind of hard to keep your dress on when it’s open,” her partner, Guillaume, said. “It was in our thoughts all along the program. I think the result affected us.”

Last week, South Korean skater Yura Min also recovered impressively from a wardrobe malfunction on the ice after her outfit began slipping from her shoulders mid-routine.

While Gabriella was clearly upset with what happened during her routine, she was ultimately pleased with how she and Guillaume handled it, noting, “I think we should be proud we were able to deliver a strong performance with that happening.”
