Gabourey Sidibe Is a Gleaming Goddess on the Cover of ‘Nylon’

Gabourey Sidibe, who recently opened up about her weight-loss surgery, is the new cover star on Nylon magazine’s April 2017 beauty issue. For her captivating cover-girl moment, the actress has glowing skin and a full head of voluminous curls that look amazing as they blow around her face.

Sidibe shared the cover on Instagram with a caption that read, “This was such a dope shoot! And I got to keep a few of the clothes so don’t say nothing when I pull up in a crown, cocked to the side! Thank you @nylonmag and everyone who helped to make me feel like a bomb ass QUEEN!”

Sidibe’s brilliant beam of confidence shines in her cover shot, inspiring plenty of her followers to offer supportive comments. “Congrats on better health now you can walk, slow motion in heels [past] anyone who has ever body shamed you,” one wrote, with another adding, “This is the most epic transformation ever, you are beautiful inside and out! Your confidence is everything!”

Still, there were also plenty of Internet haters and shamers who can’t seem to get past one thing — her weight. Indeed, keeping her self-esteem high has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for Sidibe. She reflected on her adolescent years with Nylon, sharing, “I always wanted to throw up because I was so sad.” She added, “I really liked challenging myself to not eat for three days. Sometimes I would eat a slice of bread and drink a bottle of water just to throw it up.” Reflecting even further back into her childhood, the 33-year-old actress recalls getting disciplinary beatings and being called “Fatso” by her own father, as well as other family members.

But the actress didn’t allow any of that to completely break her. After therapy, guidance, and weight-loss surgery, she has pushed through and blossomed into a strong, humbled woman. And while she admits life can still be a struggle, she’s in a much better place now. Her photo shoot most certainly illustrates that.
