Fyodor Golan Splashes Down in London With An Ocean-Centric and Awareness-Raising Spring Collection
Fyodor Golan’s Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman are known for a sense of playfulness in their often bright, often free-spirited ready-to-wear line, which they launched in 2011.
For Spring, their trademark positivism shone through, but with an added caution of raising awareness around what is an ever-worsening situation: plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. The pair linked up with Plastic Oceans U.K., the first English charity to focus on plastic pollution in the sea, to bring attention to the crisis.
When designing a collection inspired by the open water—see pearl prints, or scale-mimicking sequin embroideries, or netted jumpers and dresses—the pair said they “couldn’t ignore the issue,” and subsequently partnered with the philanthropic group.
One visible, obvious cue was their runway set backdrop; a large piece of re-created driftwood, allover coated in abandoned, found, discarded, and once-forgotten fishing gear (and also, as per, treated with Podgorny and Frydman’s neon sensibilities).
But on a deeper level, the duo have altered their production processes to eliminate plastic use and are starting to layer in more recycled materials with their designs. For Spring, this was mainly employed through reused cottons. The proof is in the pudding: You can go green, but still have fun along the way.
