FYI, Emilia Clarke Was Just as Annoyed as You Were by the ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending
Emilia Clarke revealed that she was “annoyed” by how Jon Snow got away with treating her character, Daenerys Targaryen, in the final season of Game of Thrones.
If you haven’t watched yet, there are spoilers ahead! Obviously!!!
Okay, so it may have been nine long months since the final episodes of Game of Thrones aired, but guess what? I am STILL not over the way season 8 ended because it truly was a mess! From that Starbucks cup mishap to the (multiple) continuity errors, fans of the show were rightfully upset because the creators didn’t make it the masterpiece it had the potential to be. Now that it’s over, Daenerys Targar—I mean, Emilia Clarke—is voicing her thoughts on how the series wrapped up.
“When the show did end, it was like coming out of a bunker,” Emilia told the Sunday Times. “Everything felt really strange. Then obviously for it to have the backlash it did…” Remember that viral Change.org petition to redo season 8 of GoT with new writers? Yeah, something tells me Emilia might be referring to that backlash.
“I knew how I felt when I first read it, and I tried, at every turn, not to consider too much what other people might say,” she continued, “but I did always consider what the fans might think—because we did it for them, and they were the ones who made us successful, so...it’s just polite, isn’t it?”
Regarding Daenerys’ fate on the show, Emilia also revealed she sympathized for her character and wasn’t satisfied how Jon Snow got away with murdering Daenerys scot-free. Because Jon killed Daenerys, there was no Iron Throne for anyone to sit on since her dragon burned it down...which is probably why Bran Stark became the king of kingdoms and Sansa Stark ruled the north.
“I really felt for her,” Emilia said. “And yeah, was I annoyed that Jon Snow didn’t have to deal with something? He got away with murder—literally.”
And as far as fans thinking too much content was crammed into the eighth season? Yeah, she believes the show producers “could have spun it out for a little longer.” Finally—the validation I so desperately craved. Thank you, Emilia. I can sleep well tonight knowing I was right.
