Ed Sheeran's relationship with his wife Cherry Seaborn is truly the stuff of movies: There's the fact they met as kids, plus their random reconnection one day in New York City, and a date at an epic Taylor Swift party. Toss in a secret wedding in 2018 and welcoming two children together, and their life has been one big roller coaster filled with tons of love and adventure. However, as much of a superstar as the singer is, some fans don't actually know much about his 'ship with Cherry. She's a former collegiate athlete, has worked on Wall Street, and remains the muse behind some of Ed's most popular songs. And that's honestly just the tip of the iceberg!
Prepare to put your best Sherlock Holmes 'fit on, because we're getting into absolutely everything you need to know about Ed Sheeran's wife Cherry Seaborn, below.
Cherry Grew Up With Ed
Ed and Cherry have known each other for a preeeetty long time. The two first met at Thomas Mills High in Suffolk, England and were friends for a while. Though their relationship was never actually romantic in high school, during an interview on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Ed said if they had dated back then "it would have been a disaster." Moral of the story? Things always work out the way they're meant to. 🥺
She Played Field Hockey Competitively
Cherry is kind of a badass when it comes to field hockey, which she started playing in college at Durham University in the U.K. before continuing during her years at Duke University. At Durham, Cherry led her team to the British University Championship in 2012 and 2013, per People. Like I said: badass! Though she's moved on from the sport since her college days, she still tries to make time to play, and in 2021 she was even spotted being supported by her beau in Suffolk. Men, take notes pls!
She Worked on Wall Street
Literally what an icon! Cherry ended up putting her bachelor's and master's degrees to use when she began working on Wall Street for renowned accounting firm Deloitte. Luckily, the company was able to green-light her transfer from their New York office to London in 2016 so she could be closer to Ed 🥺. Literally, could they BE any cuter? Answer: Maybe, since this pic of them is just as precious:
They Reconnected in NYC
The duo sadly lost touch when Ed went on tour and Cherry headed to Duke in North Carolina. But as fate would have it, in 2015 they ended up crossing paths again in New York City after a mutual friend named Lauren invited them both out.
"One day, she was in New York and she went to go out with Cherry because Cherry worked on Wall Street," the singer shared on Armchair Expert. "And then she was like, 'Oh Cherry Seaborn is in town, do you want to hang out?' I was like, 'Yes.'" Oop! The "Shape of You" singer then went on to reveal he had been nervous about seeing Cherry again, since the last time they were together, they had allegedly "hooked up." 👀 Color me intrigued! "So in my head, I was like what if she remembers that because it was like a while ago. It was very innocent. Very gentle, it was a kiss," he continued.
But! They Reconnected *Again* at One of Taylor Swift's Parties
After reuniting in New York in 2015, the two had one of their first ~official~ dates at none other than Taylor Swift's Rhode Island mansion, which is pretty epic if you ask me. Also, talk about setting the bar high, @Ed! Both he and Cherry met up during one of Tay's legendary Fourth of July parties. The celeb shared with People in 2017 that he "went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor's Fourth of July party. I was texting [Cherry], and she was like, 'I'm in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,' and I was like, 'So am I.' I kinda said to Taylor, 'Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?' The rest is history." It's! Giving! Star! Crossed! Lovers! And! I! Am! Here! For! It!
Just a year later in 2016, the couple celebrated their one-year anniversary at yet another one of Taylor's get-togethers. In fact! The two were even spotted kissing in the background of a pic taken by Taylor's longtime bestie Abigail Anderson. In a since-deleted Insta post, Abigail wrote, "When there's literally so much love around your only option is to make a room for all of your love banners and sing love songs to each other. @taylorswift we LOVE you! Kudos to @teddysphotos for the photobomb of the year," per People. S'cute!
Sidenote: Cherry is also good friends with Taylor in her own right. Ed dished that Tay and his wife developed a friendship over the years, noting the two "have hung out without me quite a few times; I think they have gal chats. I don't know what they get up to, talking about cats or whatever." Okay, would love to be added to the group chat, TYVM. Anyway! Adorbs pic of one of my fav celeb BFF duos, incoming:
Cherry and Ed's Wedding Was V Intimate
In January 2018, Ed and Cherry secretly got married during an intimate ceremony with only 40 guests. The singer spilled all of the deets surrounding the celebration during an appearance on the Table Manners With Jessie Ware podcast, and dubbed it a "tiny, tiny event," saying, "We did it at night on a random day in the middle of January in the middle of nowhere. No one knew, no one came to it. We lit candles, we got married, we went back [and] had a curry." Though that already sounds like a pretty *chef's kiss* night to me, Ed added the sweet detail that "the wedding party was more a celebration of us and our friends. I didn't want pictures getting out and I'm surprised they didn't. Everyone was very present."
She and Ed Took a Hiatus Together
After Cherry moved back to the U.K. in 2016 to be closer to Ed, the singer decided to take a short break from making music, which I personally hope he never does again for my own selfish reasons 😭. During an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Ed confessed, "We were basically like, 'Let's both quit our jobs and let's have a year of forming a tight bond and relationship. So we went traveling and spent every day for a year together."
He also separately told People the following ahead of his Apple Music documentary, Songwriter: "I ended the tour and I [realized] I hadn't ever really lived a life...I haven't properly formed relationships with people so I needed to have a year off and spend it with friends and family and Cherry and actually become a human being." And if you thought their hiatus was boring, you'd def be wrong! The couple traveled together to places like Fiji, Italy, and even Australia. "[Cherry] hadn't really done anything either, so it was an opportunity for both of us to get to know each other and live life a little bit."
She Shares Two Children With the Musician
In August 2020, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Lyra Antarctica. In an Instagram pic announcing the happy news, the singer wrote, "Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you...Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter—Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x"
More recently, the singer announced that he and Cherry actually welcomed their second child: "Want to let you all know we've had another beautiful baby girl. We are both so in love with her, and over the moon to be a family of 4 x." The touching revelation was accompanied with another image of a pair of white baby socks on top of a brown blanket.
Ed Has Written Many, Many Songs About Cherry
Ed released his album ÷ (Divide) in March 2017, which included the most beautiful ballad called "Perfect." And though fans already speculated that Cherry was the inspo behind the swoon-worthy lyrics, Ed himself confessed that he wrote the song about her after attending a party together at James Blunt's house.
"We got really hammered and took our shoes off and danced on his lawn and then jumped in the pool," he told Radio.com. "And then the next day I was like, 'That's a cool story,' so I put it in a song."
But! That's! Not! All! Ed's verse in Taylor's song "End Game" also culled major inspiration from his wife. In the song, he sings, "Knew it when I was young / We connected when we were a little bit older" and "Something was born on the Fourth of July." *Sigh* The talent! The dedication! The romance!
...And He Even Named a Pub Named After Her
Yep, you read that right! According to reports, the singer opened a Notting Hill pub with his business partner Stuart Camp and named it Bertie Blossoms—a cheeky moniker that combines the names of Stuart’s girlfriend Liberty Shaw (aka Bertie) and references Cherry because of the word blossom, obviously. Ed also has another pub on the grounds of his Suffolk estate (lol imagine being able to own one of those!) named after Cherry called The Lancaster Lock. No thoughts, just me manifesting this love for myself!
