On my YouTube series Julia Tries Everything, I set out to try the most popular menu items at different chain restaurants and entire flavor lineups from beloved brands. Yes, the job is as great as it sounds, and no, you can't take it from me. My goals: to figure out which dishes live up to the hype, and to help viewers narrow down what they should buy next. (Also to stay hydrated and stretch often: Testing 19 pizzas at a clip is an athletic achievement.)

Which brings me to Eggo: The brand's offerings are a lot more stacked than you might remember, and now include pancakes, French toast sticks, and many other fun options. But for the moment, I'm zeroing in on classic waffles. In my mind, the tenet of a good waddle is the fluff-to-crunch ratio: There should be a brief crispness that gives way to a pillowy interior (I have to tell you that my father's waffles remain the actual best—and those are the facts). If you were to find yourself in the freezer section, here's my guidance.

This very trendy flavor is the perfect pick for constructing an ice cream sandwich. Sprinkle flaky sea salt on the finished product if you're feeling beyond luxurious.

Buttermilk

The addition of buttermilk means this one's slightly less dense than the regular homestyle waffle. Something about this flavor brings you right back to third grade, inhaling breakfast out of the microwave before sprinting to the bus.

While amazing on its own, drizzle this bad boy with some warm peanut butter and you're really in business.

The little bursts of sweetness make this waffle awesome on its own—but life is short and syrup makes everything better.

These slightly larger, Belgian-style waffles have the texture of a puffy cloud, plus the softest hint of vanilla flavor. Ahhhh.
