FX's Upcoming Historical Drama Series 'Shogun' Receives Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

The upcoming FX, Hulu and Disney+ historical drama series Shogun has officially debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect score.

The series stars Hiroyuki Sanada and is based off of the original 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The series, which is set in Japan during the year 1600, is partly a historical drama, but it also includes fictionalized versions of true events. Following various characters and story arcs throughout the series, the show has been comparable to the early days of Game of Thrones. The show has now made its debut on Rotten Tomatoes. Receiving incredible praise by reviewers like TIME critic Judy Bernan who said, "At a time when so many of TV’s biggest swings, from Amazon's The Rings of Power and Citadel to Netflix's Stranger Things and The Crown, have yielded at least partial misses, FX's Shogun stands apart as a genuine masterpiece." Another review from Nick Clark of the London Evening Standard wrote, "Shogun is prestige drama writ large. Lush locations (it's impossible to tell that this 16th century Japan was all recreated in Vancouver), superb performances and an engaging story that may take its time but inexorably draws the viewer in."

As per the official synopsis Shogun's plot reads, "Set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village." Sanada stars alongside, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira. Shogun releases on FX, Hulu and Disney+ on February 27.
