Fundraiser for multiple sclerosis slated for April 13

Apr. 4—A dart-based fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is scheduled for April 13 at Imperial Lanes in Terre Haute.

"Finding a Cure for MS, One Dart at a Time" starts at 1 p.m. and will consist of a Dart Blind Draw, silent auction and 50/50 raffles. Imperial Lanes is at 400 N. Third St.

Money raised will go to the National MS Society and local organizers are requesting it be used for research, said Connie Hinsenkamp, who has MS and helps organize the annual fundraiser, now in its eighth year.

Part of the funds go to winning participants, but typically those individuals donate the money back for MS, Hinsenkamp said.

The event has averaged about 100 people attending annually from all over Indiana, she said.

"Be prepared for a lot of fun and laughs. You do not have to play darts to attend. It is open to all," Hinsenkamp said.

If anyone is interested in donating items for the silent auction, being a board sponsor (for as little as $25), helping with the event, or just donating, contact Hinsenkamp at 812-236-1096.

The National MS Society have chapters serving Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Those who need assistance or support can contact the chapter, Hinsenkamp said.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body.

Nearly 1 million people live with multiple sclerosis in the United States, Hinsenkamp said. Most are diagnosed between the age of 20 and 50 but now there are estimates of more than 10,000 children under the age of 18 living with MS.

Currently there is no cure or a definitive cause.

"If diagnosed, it is not a death sentence, just life changing. It's important to find a doctor you feel comfortable with and follow their guidance of medication and activity levels," she said.

A local MS self help group meets at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Westminster Village.
