What Is “Full Moon Fashion”? Sam Smith Has the Answer

Sam Smith loves a statement coat. The last one he Instagrammed in December of last year was like something out of Liberace’s closet, all faux fur and fabulosity. (He even styled it with that more-is-more spirit in mind: Think, bedazzled captain’s hat, paisley shirt, and chocolate-colored striped slacks.)

Smith’s latest dream coat has just as much standalone power, mostly because it’s the only piece of clothing he’s wearing. The British singer took to the streets of London earlier today dressed in a cozy, deep blue, shearling-lined velvet coat and little else. He accompanied the bare-legged selfie photo with this caption: “Full Moon Fashion.”

A little confused? Thankfully, Vogue’s go-to astrologer Alice Bell has some illuminating insights. According to her, tonight’s full moon in Virgo is supposed to be the biggest and brightest of the entire year, which makes its effects even stronger on pretty much everything, including your fashion choices. “Full moons tend to draw out the crazier side in people because emotions are usually heightened at this time,” Bell says. “It's a time to try things you normally wouldn’t do,” which in Smith’s case, clearly means going pant-less. Call it a total eclipse of the um, wardrobe.
