The Friends Reunion Will Reportedly Film This Summer

UPDATE May 12 at 10:50 A.M.: Anyone disappointed by a delay for the Friends reunion now has a glimmer of hope. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman, Bob Greenblatt, told Variety that they may start filming by the end of summer. "We’re holding out for being able to get this special done hopefully by the end of the summer, if the stars align and hopefully we can get back into production," he told them. "We do think there’s a value to having a big, raucous live audience to experience these six great friends coming back together and we didn’t want to just suddenly do it on a web call with, you know, six squares and people shooting from their kitchens and bedrooms.”

HBO MAX launches on May 27 with all of the old episodes of Friends. Hopefully the reunion will be there just a few months later.

Fans have waited more than 15 years for new Friends and it looks like they'll have to wait a little more. Variety reports that the reunion special that was planned for HBO Max will be postponed due to coronavirus concerns. Sources close to the production say that filming was supposed to start within the next few weeks, but have been pushed to May, citing safety concerns.

Warner Bros. Television and HBO Max haven't issued any updates. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer were all set to return for the special, which was to be filmed on the original lot used for filming, Warner Bros. Studio lot 24. It was also supposed to coincide with the launch of HBO's streaming service, HBO Max.

The Friends reunion is just the latest show to have change production because of coronavirus. Reese Witherspoon and Aniston's The Morning Show on Apple TV+ has been put on hold along with Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Soldier, just to name a few high-profile projects. Production on countless other television shows (Riverdale, Survivor, and Ryan Murphy's The Prom) has also been suspended indefinitely.
