French’s Made Mustard Ice Cream and You Can Try It for Free This Weekend

There are a lot of quirky ice cream flavors you can find all around the world, from charcoal to lavender, and even beer-flavored scoops.

But what about ice cream that’s flavored after your favorite condiments? In honor of National Mustard Day, French’s and Coolhaus has you covered with their limited edition Mustard Ice Cream — and you can sample it for free. If that’s what you’re into.

According to a statement by French’s, the Los Angeles-based ice cream shop Coolhaus Ice Cream has developed a mustard flavored frozen treat for anyone who’s a fan of savory and sweet snacks. And yes, it’s just as blindingly yellow as the classic mustard we know and love.

“It's been so fun to explore this classic condiment in a whole new way and create an unforgettable, thoughtfully-crafted ice cream flavor with an All-American taste,” said Coolhaus CEO & founder Natasha Case.

The yellow ice cream is served up with a pretzel cookie. But don’t worry, it’s not exactly like squirting your mouth full of mustard — which would be painful and unpleasant. Two things ice cream should never be.

Instead, according to Food & Wine, the ice cream flavor is much sweeter and creamier, as well as having a flavor that is “a little sweet and fruity, almost reminiscent of Starbursts.” You apparently get a little scent of classic mustard when you first get it, though. Food & Wine’s taste test came with some mixed reactions, so it’s clearly not a flavor for everyone.

But luckily, since Coolhaus is handing out samples of the new treat for free in New York and Los Angeles, you won’t really be risking anything if you still want to give it a try.

Coolhaus will be handing out free ice cream in New York City from a French’s branded ice cream truck on Aug. 1, 2, and 3. On Thursday, you can spot the truck at Rockefeller Center and Hearst Tower/Columbus Circle. On Friday, it will be in Brooklyn Heights and Madison Square Park. On Saturday, catch it on Main Street, in the Hamptons and East Hampton Main Beach. Exact times will be announced on the Coolhaus and French’s Instagram accounts.

Anyone who does try the ice cream is encouraged to @Frenchs and use hashtags #Frenchs and #MustardIceCream to tell the brand what they think.

If you’re in Los Angeles, you can visit the Coolhaus shop between Aug. 2 and 4, as well as Aug. 9 and 11 to grab a free mustard ice cream. And if you’re not on either coast, French’s has a recipe you can try at home.

Perhaps this will start a great tradition of condiment ice creams. Next year, we’re betting on ketchup.
