Fremont YMCA receives $20,000 grant to widen access to programming, memberships

The YMCA of Sandusky County has received a $20,000 Ohio Department of Aging/Healthy Aging Grant from Ottawa County Senior Resources.

This grant, in conjunction with $5,000 in equipment purchased by the Otterbein Marblehead SeniorLife Community, will allow the YMCA to provide free access to the YMCA/CDC Diabetes Prevention Program and Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s disease patients as well as grant free access to the Y for select Ottawa County seniors.

Through the collaboration between the YMCA of Sandusky County, Ottawa County Senior Resources and the Otterbein Marblehead SeniorLife Community, the programs will be based out of Ottawa County Senior Centers and Otterbein’s Marblehead campus.

The Diabetes Prevention Program will focus on behavior change through evidenced-based education on healthy eating, physical activity, and weight loss. This program will be available at all three Ottawa County Senior Centers, Otterbein’s Marblehead campus, and the YMCA of Sandusky County. Rock Steady Boxing is a health and wellness program designed for people with Parkinson’s disease. It’s based on a foundation of non-contact boxing, and it’s effective for improving symptoms that people with Parkinson’s typically experience. This program will be available at Otterbein’s Marblehead campus and the YMCA of Sandusky County. Those interested in enrolling should contact Schroeder. It starts July 1.

Ottawa Country residents age 65 and over who do not receive a fitness benefit from their Medicare Advantage or supplement plan are eligible to receive a one-year Y membership at no cost. Those interested in a membership should call the Y at 419-332-9622. Memberships will be available starting Monday.
