Freida Pinto on “Shaking It Off” With Taylor Swift, Audrey Hepburn & Growing Up at a Convent

Freida Pinto’s breakout role in Slumdog Millionaire showcased her killer dance moves (verified by “Jai Ho”!), and they weren’t haphazard. She loves music, and more specifically, uses dance to amplify her mood and get in the zone. “Music is my go-to. I love dancing,” she tells Yahoo Style, while behind the scenes at a fashion shoot. Laughing, she continues: “If I really want a mood lifter and want to ‘shake it off,’ I’d probably turn on Taylor Swift and start dancing.”

While the India-born actress has made quite the mark in Hollywood—from appearing in Bruno Mars’s music video to starring in Desert Sun— she comes from a storied past. As a child, Pinto went to a convent school, which is perhaps where she became inspired to sport a shorter ‘do.  (She says it’s now “stress-free” and that the convent “was very strict about hair. Hair had to be perfect.”)

But coming from a woman who’s been seen wearing form-fitting dresses by Ferragamo, Thakoon, Jason Wu and Elie Saab, this might surprise you: She’s not into wearing tight clothes. “I don’t like feeling constricted and knowing that my organs are saying hello to each other in a way that they shouldn’t be,” she admits. “So when I am feeling my best and I don’t mind giving myself a little torture and pain, I’ll probably wear really tight jeans.”

Notwithstanding her vehemence against snug stuff, she’s really just a fashion girl at heart. At a young age, she’d go through magazines, find beautiful dresses, and have tailors re-create them. And when asked which women she admires, she answered: “I still look back to women like Audrey Hepburn who’s always embodied class and elegance,” says Pinto. “She’s definitely one person I look up to.”
