Free pet vaccines, low-cost chips available
May 21—Dog and cat owners in eastern New Mexico can look forward to a free vaccine clinic and low-cost microchips next weekend.
On June 1 and June 2, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the High Plains Humane Society, Rezdawg Rescue, and Greater Good Charities will allow healthy dogs and cats to come receive vaccines and microchips.
The available vaccines are distemper/parvo for dogs, FVRCP for cats, and rabies for both. Microchips are only $15 per animal.
"Canine distemper is a huge issue in the area. It is highly contagious and carries a high mortality rate," said Susan Meany, a veterinarian.
Meany travels from Colorado to Clovis each time the event rolls around. She said they try to do these clinics three times a year.
"Parvo is also highly contagious and lives pretty much everywhere in the soil," Meany said. "We are trying to minimize the loss of life and suffering that these diseases cause. The more animals that get vaccinated, the fewer outbreaks that will happen."
The clinic will be held at the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico parking lot at 2217 E Brady Ave.
Organizers ask that owners bring previous vaccination records if possible and that dogs must be leashed; cats must be in a carrier. Cash payments only, and donations are welcome to offset costs.
