Free pet adoptions in 15 cities this weekend will help more dogs and cats find loving homes—at least, that's the hope of Mars, which is supporting its 15th annual pet adoption weekend.

Sadly, the need for pet adoptions is growing. According to Shelter Animals Count, the number of stray dogs entering animal shelters has increased by 26% since 2021.

"The sad fact is more pets entered shelters than left them in the first half of 2023," said Lisa Campbell, senior vice president of Corporate Affairs at Mars Petcare. " That's a heartbreaking trend we want to help change in the second half."

Mars, which sells familiar brands like Pedigree and Royal Canin, has pledged to cover $50,000 in adoption fees for cats and $50,000 for dogs this weekend. The company also partnered with Katie Couric for a special episode of "Unleashed With Katie Couric," which will be released on YouTube this weekend.

"Pets have brought so much joy to my family over the years," said Couric. "As a lifelong pet lover, I am excited to support Mars Pet Adoption Weekend and help get these loving animals out of overcrowded shelters and into the forever homes they deserve."

In the South, participating shelters include the Best Friends Pet Resource Center in Bentonville, Arkansas; Wolf Trap Animal Rescue in McLean, Virginia; Metro Animal Care and Control, Nashville Humane Association, and Williamson County Animal Center in Nashville, Tennessee; Humane Society of Tampa Bay in Tampa, Florida; and Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC.
