SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Did you know Utah has a free fishing day? We do, and it’s right around the corner.

There are several great Utah fishing destinations to check out this time of year, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. They say that right now, the fish are “hungry and biting.”

Free Fishing Day will be celebrated on Saturday, June 8 — allowing anyone to fish at any public waterbody in the Beehive State without a license.

“It makes for a great family activity and offers an easy way to get outdoors and introduce your kids to fishing (or your neighbors and friends),” the DWR said. “It’s an ideal day not only for beginning anglers to give fishing a try, but is also a fun time for experienced anglers, too.”

Utah DWR Sportfish Coordinator Trina Hendrick said that because you don’t need a license to fish on Free Fishing Day, it’s the perfect time to take someone with you and introduce them to the sport.

Additionally, she said early June is one of the best times to fish in Utah.

“All of the fish in the state, both warmwater and coldwater species, are active and willing to bite this time of year,” she said.

Beginner fishing spots

Local community ponds are a great option for beginners, the DWR said. They are quick, close to home, and a great place to take kids and other less experienced anglers.

There are 57 community ponds located across Utah. More information about each one can be found here.

Advanced fishing spots

For more advanced anglers who want to visit a larger waterbody, these are where the DWR recommends you go:

  • Joes Valley Reservoir (Emery County)

  • Lake Powell (Garfield, Kane, San Juan counties)

  • Fish Lake (Sevier County)

  • Strawberry Reservoir (Wasatch County)

  • Middle Provo River (Wasatch County)

  • Bear Lake (Rich County)

  • Starvation Reservoir (Duchesne County)

  • Long Park Reservoir (Daggett County)

  • Pelican Lake (Uintah County)
