Free comic books and more at the library in May

LA GRANDE — Activities are in full swing at Cook Memorial Library in May.

Free comic books for all ages will be available (while supplies last) on Saturday, May 4. Drop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants will be entered in a drawing for Hobby Habit gift certificates. Thanks to the library’s activity partner for this event, The Collector’s Outpost in Meridian, Idaho.

CHD is providing an art program, “Art Out Loud,” for ages 6-11 to explore and express their feelings and experiences through creating art. This free group is offered on Fridays from 3-4 p.m. in the Community Room.

On Saturday, May 11, all ages are invited to attend a visit from Lego Masters contestant Kelly Bartlett beginning at 11 a.m. in the Community Room. Hear about what life is like on a reality show, lessons she learned, and life as a professional Lego builder.

Registration for Summer Reading opens on May 13. Sign up on the library’s website or download the Beanstack app.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is providing a free Water Safety class on Thursday, May 23, at 4 pm in the Community Room. The guests will give a talk and share a special storytime on water safety and life jackets. The event is designed for older preschoolers through first grade, but all families are welcome.

The EOU Writing Center in the library is open Mondays, May 6, 13 and 20, from 2-4 p.m., with EOU students providing writing assistance for teens and adults.

Lego Club for kids meets Tuesday, May 7, from 3-5 p.m. in the Community Room. Lego bricks are provided. This will be the final Lego Club until October.

Storytime is held on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the Story Circle. The weekly get-together includes stories and a craft.

The Dungeons & Dragons and gaming group meets on Thursday, May 9, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. This free activity is open to all ages. For information, contact Ryan at 541-962-1339.

Storytellers meets Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. This group is a casual setting where participants respond to prompts and share spontaneous tellings of personal experiences, practice compassionate listening, and create community.

Spells and Stars Book Club for adults meets Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m. The book up for discussion is “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman. New members may join at any time.

The library will be closed Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.
