This past weekend at NYC Pride, John Rabbia and Michael Richman got engaged, and we couldn’t be happier for them. The two men are part of a flag troupe called The Flaggots (yes, you read that right!), and they choreographed an intricate routine for the parade this past weekend. However, unbeknownst to Michael, John had decided that he wanted to use the opportunity to propose, and he’d gotten the entire troupe in on his plan.

The routine itself was SO beautiful — twirling rainbow flags everywhere, while Jesse Glynne’s “Hold My Hand” blared over the speakers. Toward the end of the routine, Michael walked confidently through the crowd of performers toward John, kissed him on the cheek, and then got down on one knee.

I’m so incredibly steamrolled with love! And I’m crying left and right uncontrollably out of joy! I cried when I woke up, I cried rewatching the proposal video, I cried alone in the shower! Those of you who know me equate me as the Janeane Garofalo of the Colorguard world so naturally you’ll understand how unsettling it is that my feelings of joy can’t be contained!

Thanks you to everyone who conspired behind my back to plan this elaborate proposal, I literally never saw it coming!

For a long time I resigned myself to a life
without the reality of marriage because it wasn’t legal for so long. After it was made the law of the land I still had reservation even. But after meeting John 3 years ago at a L Mario Hellinger‘s loft in NJ that opinion changed forever. ❤️

We wish the pair a lifetime of love and happiness.
