Frances Slocum State Park pool opening

KINGSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to state parks this Memorial Day weekend.

There’s so much to do at Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County.

The swimming pool at Frances Slocum State Park is opening for the season on Saturday. Guests are invited to come enjoy picturesque views of the mountains while cooling off in the water.

“The staff here has been diligent in getting everything together, getting the pool full and clean, and balancing it, it’s crystal clear and beautiful,” said Kevin Koflanovich Frances Solcum State Park Manager.

As part of a Department of Health Cancer Prevention Initiative, free sunscreen stations are placed at the pool and around the park.

The park manager tells 28/22 News they’re fully staffed with lifeguards this year something you don’t hear often.

“We have a lot of returning staff which is great, also our posting has been up for a while now so we’ve gone through the interview process, we’ve interviewed a bunch of lifeguards, and the posting is still open,” says Koflanovich.

If you’re planning on visiting, be mindful of detours due to construction near the park.

“The park is still easily accessible to come up Eighth Street to Mount Olivet, but Green and Manor Road are closed at certain points,” stated Koflanovich.

We spoke to a family setting up their campsite who traveled to NEPA from Maryland.

“We’re going to hopefully go maybe do a picnic by the lake one day, we’re gonna catch a baseball game this weekend, and my wife is originally from Pittston, so we’ll probably drive around a little bit and she’ll show us some of the old sights where she was from,” explained Stephen Harrer from Hughesville, Maryland.

It’s free to visit Frances Slocum State Park but there is a fee to use the pool.
