Frances McDormand Wins Best Actress—and Best Beauty By Wearing No Makeup at the 2018 Oscars
Frances McDormand is one of the rare few actresses in Hollywood who doesn’t travel with a glam squad, and we love her for it.
Frances McDormand is not your average Oscar-winning actress. Throughout awards season, the “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” star continued to march to the beat of her own drum (and got prematurely bleeped from network censors because of it). After all, as she stated while accepting the BAFTA for best actress in her role as Mildred Hayes: “I have a problem with compliance.” That night, McDormand, 60, decided not to adhere to the all-black dress code mandated by the women standing in solidarity with the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, though she was clear about her stance. “I stand with my sisters in solidarity,” she explained after making a joke about her gown that was printed with pink lips. Since then, she's stepped out in a variety of high-neck, floor-length gowns, and yet her beauty look has never once wavered. She’s accepted award after award (after award) in blonde tousled waves and barely any makeup, and tonight was no different. At the 90th Academy Awards, before she took the stage and title of Best Actress, McDormand appeared fresh-faced from the audience with not a touch of makeup on, a light, natural flush of the cheeks, and maybe, if at all, a some gel on the ends of her close-cropped strands.
Unlike some of her fellow best-actress nominees, McDormand doesn’t work with a glam squad, nor does she pose for glambots on the red carpet—not that there’s anything wrong with that. She is a rare lone wolf in the film industry. Like her character in "Three Billboards," McDormand is about as no-bullshit as it gets. She is honest and straightforward, keeping her politics quiet, her hair and makeup completely natural, and her fashion choices her own. When she stepped up to the podium tonight, McDormand requested each female nominee in the room to stand with her in celebration. And what could have possibly been more beautiful than that?
